We Don’t Get What We Want – We Get What We Are

The Laws of Attraction – What Goes Wrong

Anyone who has done any study in the field of personal development or “self help” as the industry tends to be called, will know and confirm that there are indeed certain fundamental principles that operate regardless of our appreciation, understanding or even willingness to accept them.

If I disbelieve in the concept of gravity for instance does that allow me the gift of unpowered flight? No of course not.

And likewise, there are many principles and laws that operate around us, throughout us and upon us constantly. These “Laws” or “Universal Truths” as I prefer to call them, are immutable facts as consistent as our example of gravity.

Many of these laws effect our health, how we feel, act and treat those around us.

Today, I want to discuss in particular the Law of Attraction – and more over, how to apply it for a wider good that will put this truth (and hopefully many others) in a different light for our readers.

Typically, the self help crowd tells us that through affirmations, positive thinking, visualization and emotionalisation we can attract to ourselves anything or anyone that we so desire. And to a certain degree I tend to agree.

However, I believe that the reality is for the majority of people, don’t get to realise their goals, dreams, aspirations or however you want to describe the outcome of their efforts. Why would this be?

If by now, your nodding your head and saying “yep – been there and done that” – then keep reading – the answer is to soon follow – if not then you must already have all that you have ever desired and I applaud you for that….. maybe keep reading anyways – who knows there might be something here for you…..

I believe the primary reason for this failing is the intention.

By that I mean, my experience has been that typically people focus on the physical manifestation of what they believe is “the ideal life”, “the perfect partner”, “the fastest car” or whatever is the area of desire (or sometimes lust) that they apply their creative attractive powers upon. However, beneath that there is always a level of self doubt, negative self talk and underlying sub conscious resistance that tends to at best retard or slow and at worst, completely cripple the goodness that should come from this effort.

The reality is money is not attracted to need. Neither are beautiful people attracted to needy people.

So what am I saying.

As the title of this article states -We don’t get what we want – we get what we are.

What this means and how it pertains to the Law of Attraction is quite simple and hence here’s another dimension to this important principle that I’d like you to consider.

If one is to entertain the notion that we are indeed able to attract to ourselves the people and circumstances that we so desire, or described another way – to create the lives that we so desire – then perhaps this gift has been given to us to not focus on the physical application of it but moreover to be applied at a far more meaningful level (some might say a spiritual level – however you wish to describe your connection with the wider universe as a whole is OK) – and by more meaningful I mean in terms of focusing on attracting the attributes, the people, the circumstances that allow you to grow and to BE MORE rather than to HAVE MORE. There is a very significant distinction.

I like to think of it like this. Diamonds come from the earth not as shiny, polished finished and valuable items. Rather they are unformed, dirty and often times are hardly recognizable as precious gems. Through science and concerted effort they are bought to the place where they can have enormous value (both in monetary terms but also in a utilitarian sense). Likewise – so to are our lives.

If we focus on refining and polishing ourselves we increase our use and our value. And where there is further use and value there is always greater reward – sometimes monetary but always in happiness and fulfilment.

Closing thought that affirms this is this;

“The wealthy man is the man that is much, not the man that has much”

You’ve hit the nail on the head here…it’s who we are that we attract, not our thoughts. Having said that, we are our thoughts.

The greatest gift on our life journey is who we become, not what we have or who we know.

When we consider what we want, we should also look at the intent behind it. Is what we want going to help us and others, or hurt. Is it to feel good, or get back at or ’show’ someone. I believe that the Law of Attraction works with our intent behind our wishes as well.
